About Us

ACT PRIORY ORIGIN

The Order of Saint John of Jerusalem Knights Hospitaller (“OSJ”) has an established Priory in New South Wales, and whose jurisdiction also includes the Australian Capital Territory.

The ACT OSJ Commandery is composed of a diverse group of individuals, united in the support of Charitable works and giving. It is made up of business people, professionals, former & active members of the Australian Defence Force, and others, all with the desire to offer service beyond self.

The Act Commandery is administratively part of the NSW Priory of the Order.

As Knights, Dames, Brothers and Sisters of the Order of St John of Jerusalem Knights Hospitaller, we belong to a worldwide network of Priories and Commanderies.

We are governed by the Constitution granted to the Order by HM King Peter II of Yugoslavia in 1964. This Constitution sets out the aims of this international ecumenical chivalrous Christian Order, whose primary Object is to relieve the sufferings of the sick and the poor.

The ACT Commandery functions under the administrative processes of the NSW Priory, which in turn is responsive to the Office of the Grand Commander, based in London.

The Head of the Order is the Grand Master, HRH Prince Karl Vladimir Karadjordjevic of Yugoslavia.

HISTORY OF THE ACT COMMANDERY

The ACT Commandery was established by the Grand Priory of Australia early in 1977.

On 24 May 1984, when the NSW Commandery was elevated to Priory status, the ACT Commandery became responsive to the new NSW Priory.

The Order progressed in NSW and then had 19 members, but the ACT Commandery, with 5 members, lapsed sometime during this period.

On 10 March 2007, the ACT Commandery was re-established, and with a good core group of members. It has continued to enthusiastically build on its strengths and actively support the ideals of the Order.

The ACT Commandery is now a vibrant group of like-minded individuals, all intent on utilising their collective life skills to make some significant and meaningful contribution to alleviating the needs of the poor, the sick and the disadvantaged among us.
